Aberdeen and Edinburgh have become the latest cities to back the Record’s campaign to outlaw polluting disposable vapes.
More than a third of councils have now thrown their weight behind calls to ban single-use vapes amid a Scottish Government review of the products.
In January, we launched our Bin The Vapes campaign to highlight the growing litter menace from throwaway vape pens blighting our streets and parks.
A staggering 1.3million disposable e-cigs are chucked away every week in the UK - wasting materials like plastic, copper and precious lithium batteries.
Our campaign sparked action from SNP-Green ministers who launched a review of disposable vapes including the potential for a ban.
Last week, Edinburgh, Stirling and North Lanarkshire became the latest councils to back a ban and write to the Scottish Government to that effect.
And yesterday, councillors in Aberdeen joined them, approving a motion that highlighted the “adverse environmental effects of single-use vapes which cause considerable levels of additional litter on our streets and in other public places”.
It added local chiefs would write to the Scottish Government “expressing Aberdeen City Council’s support for a proposed ban on single-use vapes and management of single-use vapes, and to support measures to ban their sale”.
Young activist Laura Young - who has been dubbed the “vape crusader” for her efforts to raise awareness of the environmental dangers posed by disposable devices - hailed the growing momentum behind the campaign.
She told the Record: “It's absolutely amazing to see Aberdeen join the other 13 councils in Scotland supporting a ban on disposable vapes.
“This is obviously an issue that impacts both public health but also the environment.
