Experimental composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has won the Hyundai Nordic Music Prize 2019 for her soundtrack to the HBO series Chernobyl. She took home the award over Pom Poko, Jenny Wilson, and others. Hildur follows previous Nordic Music Prize winners Robyn (2018), Susanne Sundfør (2017), and Jenny Hval (2016).

In 2019, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative reported that 2018 was a historic year for black filmmakers, noting a “record high when it came to hiring black directors.” The report reflected a significant change, showing the push for diversity both behind and in front of the camera. Though the numbers are increasing, the report also proved that Hollywood still has a long way to go.

Largely unknown just a year ago, Lizzo was named entertainer of the year at the 51st annual NAACP Image Awards, which were presented on Jan. 22 at the Pasadena (Calif.) Civic Auditorium. Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Sunday night Oscar win completed her clean sweep of top show-biz awards over the past five months.

“Parasite” made history as the first foreign language film to ever win the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to taking home three other awards for best director, best international feature film and best original screenplay. It earned South Korea its first Oscar nominations and wins ever.

Hildur Guðnadóttir became only the fourth woman to win an Academy Award for score as she walked away with honors for her “Joker” music Sunday night.

Hildur Guðnadóttir has won the 2020 Oscar for Best Original Score. The Icelandic composer took home the trophy for her work Joker, which previously netted her the Golden Globe for Best Original Score. She won the Academy Award over John Williams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Alexandre Desplat (Little Women), Randy Newman (Marriage Story), and Thomas Newman (1917).
