Police in Ayrshire have arrested a 53-year-old driver in connection with a crash that killed his passenger near King Charles' Scottish residence.
Emergency services descended on the A70 in Cumnock, close to Dumfries House, shortly after midnight on Sunday November 6 following reports of a crash involving a BMW. While paramedics were quick to arrive on the scene the 64-year-old passenger was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives investigating the smash have arrested the 53-year-old driver, who sustained minor injuries, in connection with the one-car collision. Officers say formal identification of the passenger has yet to take place but next of kin have been informed.
The road was closed for 11 hours to allow investigative work to take place. Shortly afterwards, road policing cops launched an appeal for information, witness accounts and dashcam footage.
Sergeant Kevin Craig of Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died. Our enquiries into the circumstances of what happened are under way.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dash-cam footage to contact us as soon as possible. You may have captured something that could assist our investigation.
“I would like to thank members of the public for their patience while we carried out our enquiries into this serious crash. Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 0049 of 6 November, 2022.”
