Why 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' Isn't Nominated for an Oscar

Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose will executive produce “Two and Only,” an original screenplay by Latina and LGBTQ+ writer Jen Rivas-DeLoose (“Selena: The Series”) for Sony’s Screen Gems, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.The project will serve as a star vehicle for DeBose, who recently became the first openly queer woman of color to win an Academy Award for her portrayal of ‘Anita’ in Spielberg’s “West Side Story.”While plot details are being kept under wraps, the project is described as “My Best Friend’s Wedding” with a bisexual Latina pov, and will be overseen at Screen Gems by Scott Strauss and Giselle Johnson.Producing the project are Sad Unicorn’s Randall Einhorn and Jeremy Stern.DeBose was most recently seen in Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of “West Side Story,” for which she won the Academy Award, SAG Award, BAFTA, and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is currently in production on Sony Pictures’ “Kraven,” which is set to release January 13, 2023.

That’s nonetheless what happened for the 2022 show, as Miranda’s more somber ballad, “Dos Oruguitas,” was what got nominated by Disney from “Encanto,” and ultimately nominated.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” — that “Encanto” earworm that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, becoming only the second No. 1 song ever from a Disney animated film (after “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” in 1993) — somehow wasn’t even nominated for Best Original Song at the 2022 Academy Awards.And to make matters even stranger, another song from “Encanto” — “Dos Oruguitas,” performed by Sebastian Yatra — was nominated in the category that also includes Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die” (from “No Time to Die”), Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” (from “King Richard”), Reba McEntire’s “Somehow You Do” (from “Four Good Days”) and Van Morrison’s “Down to Joy” (from “Belfast”).But it’s not Oscar’s fault for overlooking “Bruno.” The song — which, like “Dos Oruguitas,” was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda — was not submitted for nomination by Disney.

As I tipped in my story on the Best Original Song performers announced on Tuesday for the 94th Annual Academy Awards, another key movie song not mentioned in their release, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto will also be performed on the big show even though it wasn’t even submitted by Disney and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda for consideration in the category where Miranda is a nominee for another tune from the same film, “Dos Oruguitas” also from Encanto.

However, while Dos Oruguitas was submitted for best original song, the biggest hit from the film wasn’t eligible for a nomination. But, as the 94th Academy Awards takes place later this month, the first live performance of We Don’t Talk About Bruno will hit the stage.
