The Manchester United quarterly conference calls used to be a minor event. It was during the May 2018 call that Ed Woodward infamously clarified, "If I can answer very simply and candidly. Playing performance doesn't really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business."
After United appointed their new director of communications, Charlie Brooks, the script was changed so Woodward would only address football matters. So Richard Arnold was thrown under the bus as he bragged about the app rating.
Arnold confirmed the 4.9 rating on the day United were ejected from the League Cup by Derby County on penalties and Paul Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy by Jose Mourinho. A tense exchange between Mourinho and Pogba at Carrington was captured the next morning.
Fear not, Arnold had declared United "have more followers on Facebook than the NBA, the NFL and NHL combined". One of the questions fielded was, "Are there other opportunities to monetise the training kit, elsewhere on the jersey?"

After Arnold succeeded Woodward as chief executive in February 2022, there were only two more conference calls that coincided with the quarterly results and the last was in September of that year.
The Glazer family announced the strategic review of the club in November 2022 and United have not held a conference call since. Arnold left the club in November as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos Group intended to install a replacement. Omar Berrada will officially start as the new United chief executive in the summer.
