Erik ten Hag says he had a catch-up chat with Lyon star Nicolas Tagliafico prior to Manchester United’s friendly against the Ligue 1 club to talk about his World Cup success with Argentina.
The defender worked under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, playing for him for four years prior to his switch to France. The 30-year-old began the friendly on the bench on Wednesday afternoon.
United are not looking for a left-back this summer with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Alvaro Fernandez among the ranks. Alex Telles and Brandon Williams could both depart this summer to whittle down the number of players in that position.
There was a mini-Ajax reunion ahead of kick-off in Scotland as Ten Hag was spotted chatting to his former player along with Donny van de Beek, Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ten Hag explained why he had spoken to Tagliafico. He said: “I didn't see him after the World Cup and I was so proud that he won the World Cup. It’s a legacy for life, when you achieve something big. We have a really good relationship over the year.
“We have done a lot together, celebrated a lot of success and we have such a good connection so I was so proud of him that he achieved the World Cup, that was a brilliant moment.”
Tagliafico was brought to Ajax by Ten Hag in 2018, going on to win three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch cups together. He played 169 games under Ten Hag in Amsterdam, scoring 16 goals and assisting 23 more.
