How Robin Williams cheered up Steven Spielberg when he was directing ‘Schindler’s List’

Robin Williams called him every week to cheer him up while he was filming his 1993 Holocaust movie, “Schindler’s List.”Spielberg’s friendship with Williams stretched back to “Hook,” the 1991 flick that Spielberg directed and featured Williams as an adult Peter Pan.Spielberg opened up about “Schindler’s List,” and several other topics, in a wide-ranging interview in the Hollywood Reporter to talk about the 30th anniversary of the movie, which was filmed in Krakow, Poland, in 1993.The movie, which won seven Oscars at the 66th Academy Awards in 1994 — including Best Picture and Best Director (for Spielberg) — told the story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), who saved thousands of Jews from the Nazis during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories.“Robin knew how hard it was for me on the movie, and once a week, every Friday, he’d call me on the phone and do comedy for me,” Spielberg said.“Whether it was after 10 minutes or 20 minutes, when he heard me give the biggest laugh, he’d hang up on me.”Neeson also remembered Williams’ Friday phone calls to Spielberg.“Steven would tell us afterward the sorts of things Robin would say,” Neeson recalled. “Once he started a riff of ‘I’m not a Nazi, I’m a nutsy,’ all this sort of s – – t.”Williams, the comedically brilliant “Mork & Mindy” star and Oscar-winning actor (“Good Will Hunting”), died by suicide in 2014 at the age of 63.Spielberg said that shooting “Schindler’s List” took its toll on him, emotionally.“The hard days were beyond my imagination and the easy days were never easy,” he told THR.

Kate Winslet Says ‘Titanic’ Fame Was So ‘Horrible’ That ‘You Bet Your F—ing Life I’ Chose Smaller Films After: ‘My Life Was Unpleasant’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Kate Winslet said in a new interview with Net-a-Porter that she actively took roles in smaller, independent films after the record-breaking success of “Titanic” because the fame that resulted in starring in James Cameron’s epic was “horrible.” Winslet was just 22 years old when “Titanic” opened in 1997 and became a cultural phenomenon. It won 11 Oscars, including best picture, and became the highest-grossing film of all time, as well as the first to gross $1 billion worldwide. To say it turned Winslet and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio into overnight superstars would be an understatement.

‘Jeopardy!’ showrunner finally reveals why Mayim Bialik was fired: Ken Jennings ‘won the job’

Mayim Bialik was axed as the co-host of “Jeopardy!” because the show needed more “consistency” with current host Ken Jennings, showrunner Michael Davies revealed to reporters.“When I took over the show, we were really forced into that situation from everything that happened before, the guest-hosting period,” Davies said at the annual Television Critics Association Press Tour on Saturday. The NBC game show rotated in hosts following the death of iconic host Alex Trebek in November 2020 at the age of 80 after battling pancreatic cancer.“Mayim was left hosting the primetime versions; I brought in Ken to guest-host once Mayim had her schedule on her Fox sitcom,” Davies said, alluding to Bialik’s Fox series “Call Me Kat,” which premiered in January 2021.“Over the past two-and-a-half seasons, what we’ve heard from a lot of television stations and other interested parties is that they wanted more consistency,” Davies said.
