Signing veteran striker Jamie Vardy will not solve all of Erik ten Hag’s problems at Manchester United, but it could provide a short-term solution to one of their more pressing issues.
United are in the market for a new striker with Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo their only senior recognised centre forwards. Speculation has been rife over Ronaldo’s future, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wanting to leave the club in search of Champions League football.
The Manchester Evening News recently reported that Ten Hag would be open to selling Ronaldo, but chairman Joel Glazer wants to keep the Portuguese. If he were to be sold, United should consider a move for Leicester man Vardy.

The Athletic claim that the 35-year-old is one of several targets United are looking at, and with the end of the transfer window fast approaching, he may be their best bet. Signing another striker of his age could be seen as a step backwards, but he can provide the experience and goals which would be lost by selling Ronaldo.
It’s not the right solution for the club’s future, but for this season at least it could help the team string together some decent results. United currently sit bottom of the Premier League table after back-to-back defeats to Brentford and Brighton.
No United player has scored a goal yet this season and Ronaldo’s tally of 18 in the league last season made the team look far better than it actually was. With Vardy scoring 15 in the same period, he could offer a similar threat and would be less of a risk for United than other targets they’ve been linked with.
