Whoopi Goldberg, Zendaya and more honoured at Essence's Black Women in Hollywood Awards

Kirk Douglas and for 65 years by no means the lesser half of one of the most fascinating and enduring marriages in Hollywood. She and Douglas met in Paris in 1953 when he was looking for a bilingual publicist for the film company he was planning to start.

When Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Neal and Wilson became the first Black women to win the honor. When Neal took the stage at Union Station to accept the award she used this opportunity to give shine to other Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, queer, trans and everyone in the margins and said of her monumental win: “One day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it’ll just be normal.”

ESSENCE held its 14th annual Black Women In Hollywood Awards. The theme of the 2021 awards show, “Mastering Our Stories,” highlighted the resilience of Black women in Hollywood.

In a typical Oscar week, Essence's Black Women in Hollywood Awards is a star-studded, tears-and-laughter packed, invitation-only luncheon celebrating the industry's Black female talent. This year, Essence’s 14th time hosting the event, called for a more pandemic friendly, virtual approach, albeit one that still packed plenty of emotion.

Zendaya is being honoured at the 14th annual ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards. The awards show, which streamed as a virtual experience Thursday night, donned the theme, “Mastering Our Stories,” which focused on “the resiliency of Black women in Hollywood through the years – including during the unprecedented pandemic.” Zendaya was one of five honorees at Thursday night’s show including Whoopi Goldberg and Andra Day.

The Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards event is streaming tonight (April 22) and photos from the pre-taped event have been released!

Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart will produce a pair of documentary films for Apple Studios that will focus on the challenges faced in Hollywood by Black actors and actresses. “Number One on the Call Sheet” will be two companion films: one specifically focused on what it takes for Black leading men to find success in entertainment, and another that will focus on the challenges faced by Black leading women.
