Daisy Ridley plays the inspiring and accomplished swimmer. Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.
Young Woman and the Sea was originally conceived as a streaming movie for Disney+, but the studio decided to give it a theatrical push after it received rave reviews in test screenings.

Deadline reported back in January 2024 that the plan was always to have the film go to Disney+ in summer 2024, in time for a campaign tied to the Summer Olympics.
Most Disney movies have gone from theatrical to streaming within 45 to 90 days of their theatrical releases. If Young Woman and the Sea follows this pattern, it could debut on Disney+ anytime between July 15 and August 29.
The Summer Olympics will take place between July 26 and August 11, so it’s likely that the movie will be released on Disney+ earlier than later.
