When the chips were down, he stepped up with one of the great solo performances in Champions League history - scoring a hat-trick to overcome the deficit - sending Atleti home and advancing Juventus.
Ronaldo said: "It was always going to be a special night - and it was, not only for the goals, but for the team.
"This is the mentality of champions, this is the journey to follow. We enjoyed a magical night."
It's not been a memorable season for the Red Devils so far, and they'll hope to do something special over the next few weeks.
