WGA Strike Hits 100 Days: Timeline of Key Events

The Entertainment Community Fund has raised more than $7 million and distributed $4.7 million-plus to more than 2,300 film and TV workers as of Friday during the strikes by the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA. The WGA’s strike began May 2 and SAG-AFTRA’s started July 14.

Several ABC shows — from long-running favourites like “Grey’s Anatomy” to newly-released hits like “Will Trent” — have been delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

As the ongoing WGA strike hits 100 days, the entirety of Hollywood wonders how long both that and the SAG-AFTRA strike will last. In the case of WGA, this strike is no officially longer than the 2007-2008 strike, but has a ways to go before it hits the 1988 writers’ strike 153 days, the longest in the union’s history.  Disney CEO Bob Iger hopes neither strike lasts that long, though.

TV late-night comedy scribe Greg Iwinski, 38, was still only an aspiring writer when Hollywood writers held their landmark strike in 2007-2008.

“It is my fervent hope that we quickly find solutions to the issues that have kept us apart these past few months, “said Bob Iger today of the Writers Guild and actors’ union’s strikes on Disney’s earnings call. “And I am personally committed to achieve this result.”

WGA marked 100 days on strike on Aug. 9 with well-attended picket lines in both New York and Los Angeles. The crowd was larger than usual outside Netflix in Los Angeles, where strikers had set up a balloon sign spelling out “100” to mark the occasion.
