Wayne Rooney has called on Manchester United fans to be patient while Erik ten Hag undertakes a “massive job” to mould the club back into a title-challenging side.
The Derby County boss also said it may take three years before United supporters see their team start to fight for the Premier League crown once again. Ten Hag was officially announced as the club’s next permanent manager ahead of the summer on Thursday.
The 52-year-old has signed a three-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. The task before Ten Hag is significant - something that Rooney is very much aware of.

“Obviously it’s a massive job,” he told Sky Sports when speaking about Ten Hag’s appointment. “It’s good to see they’ve put a manager in there.
“It looks like they’re going to give him a bit of time, from what I’ve seen. I’m sure they’re going to let him rebuild the squad because that needs to happen.”
Rooney said the United faithful must remain patient with Ten Hag, especially in the short-term, ahead of a potential title shot in the future. The 36-year-old added: “I think the fans have to be a little bit patient with it because it’s not going to change overnight or as quick as you would like.
“So they need to be a little patient, as long as they see progression and players working and playing for the shirt, with a view of maybe challenging for the title in the next three years.
“I think United fans need to be realistic with that and that’s what I’m sure the club are hoping for. I think it’s positive news today for Manchester United fans.”
