Roy Keane aims dig at Sir Alex Ferguson while picking greatest Manchester United XI

Roy Keane aimed a not-so subtle dig at Sir Alex Ferguson as he named his greatest Manchester United XI.

The former United captain was tasked with picking the club’s greatest Premier League team, as he appeared as a pundit on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. Revealing his selections after watching United’s 3-0 win over Brentford, there were more than a few surprises in his team.

The likes of Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Eric Cantona missed out on a place in Keane’s side, while the former midfielder also left himself out. Instead, Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Gary Pallister, Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin, David Beckham, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo got the nod.

Asked whether his side could win a league title, Keane responded: “I think you’ve got a chance, and that’s all you want. You’ve got players turning up, you’ve got goals in the team, you’ve got characters, you’ve got a bit of height, physicality, pace, and we’d obviously play with a high line!”

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher then chipped in to ask: “Who’d be the manager?” Keane wryly responded: “Big Ron Atkinson.”

There is of course no debate over who United’s greatest manager during the Premier League era is, with Ferguson the club’s most successful boss of all time. Keane’s tongue-in-cheek response, though, perhaps won’t come as a surprise to fans.

The Irishman famously had a big falling-out with Ferguson, which ultimately led to him leaving the club in 2005. The pair have had an ongoing feud since, with Keane insisting he won’t forgive his former manager for the way in which his departure came about.
