Violent thug updates Facebook status while sat in court before being jailed

A violent thug who broke a man’s nose during a vicious brawl posted an ill-fated social media update from court moments before he was sent to jail.
Mark Godfrey made the Facebook post as he sat in a courtroom awaiting sentencing, moaning: “Sat in court, wot a start to 2022.”
The troublemaker was jailed just minutes later when a judge refused to suspend his prison sentence and gave him eight months behind bars.
Godfrey, 41, admitted assaulting a man, causing bodily harm, on October 5.
The violence flared after he took offence at a comment that was made and the way that he was spoken to during a confrontation involving the other man.
He threw repeated punches at the victim’s face and ribs but denied kicking him, according to Hull Live.
The victim suffered a broken nose and a black eye. His head had to be glued and he suffered bruises to his ribs.
Godfrey had convictions for 34 previous offences, including eight for assaults, and others for possessing a knife and threatening behaviour.
But before he had even left the secure dock at Hull Crown Court to be taken down to the cells, Godfrey had already had three “likes” to his downbeat post and three comments wishing him luck at court.
Two more messages soon followed after he had been sent down, including a mocking one from a woman saying: “Ha ha what ya done?”
Godfrey had previously been given community orders in the past and a suspended prison sentence in 2017 for racially aggravated assault.
Mark Savage, mitigating, said that “alcohol was the trigger” in the assault but Godfrey was tired of appearing before courts.
“He has decided that this is not a life for him,” said Mr Savage.
Godfrey was not yet free from alcohol but was “on the road to getting help”.
