A violent rapist was jailed for 12 years today for trying to murder another inmate in a Scottish jail after a row sparked off by a vape.
Keith Stevenson armed himself with two homemade weapons and approached Martin Taylor from behind in a prison exercise yard and slashed him on the neck. Stevenson, who is currently serving a life sentence, approached prison officers and admitted the attack and told them: "I wish I had got him better."
He handed over the weapons made from razor blades embedded in pieces of wood and said: "I hope he dies." Stevenson, 47, admitted assaulting Taylor to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of life and attempting to murder him at Saughton prison, in Edinburgh, on August 4 in 2022 by striking him on the neck with the improvised weapons.
Lord Arthurson told him at the High Court in Edinburgh that he has "a dreadful criminal record" including convictions involving possession of weapons, serious assault, assault with intent to rob and rape. Advocate depute Gavin Dewar said on the day of the attack Stevenson approached his seated target from behind with the concealed weapons and stood over him before striking him on the neck.
The incident was captured on CCTV and footage was shown to the court of Stevenson carrying out the assault before walking off. The prosecutor said that the attacker told a prison officer that Taylor had threatened his family.
The attack victim was taken to hospital for treatment to wounds that were considered to be potentially life threatening. Defence counsel Frances Connor said: "This all started between the two men because Mr Stevenson refused to give Taylor a vape from the vaping machine and bad feeling continued to grow between them as a result."
