From A Sneak Peek of Los Javis ‘La Mesias’ to the Trend Towards Entertaining Crime, Takeaway’s from This Year’s Conecta Fiction

Conecta Fiction & Entertainment caught the mood of a larger international market with panelists in its conference strand focusing often on market challenges, when a feeding fever for premium content dominated conversations in recent editions. That said, running June 26-29 in Toledo, in market attendance and insight and shows brought to market, CF&E fairly rocked.  10 takeaways from this year’s edition:    Despite Toledo’s sweltering in a hot snap, even by Spanish standards, Conecta Fiction’s attendance sky-rocketed to 1,031 accredited professionals, an all-time record and 42% up on figures announced at the end of 2022’s edition. Reasons abound. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, to touch base with production partners, new ideas. It’s really interesting to see what’s happening here on Prime Video, Netflix or Disney+, what’s really working in Spain or Italy, and what lessons I can take back to my territory,” says Marie Leguizamo, MD Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic.

‘The Bear’ Creator Christopher Storer Joins Mob Movie That Once Intrigued Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann

Brent Lang Executive Editor Christopher Storer is no slouch when it comes to orchestrating kitchen chaos, having created the hit Hulu comedy-drama “The Bear.” Now, he’ll turn his camera on “The Winter of Frankie Machine” and trade trades the tense world of short-order cooking for a mob story about a hitman who is lured out of retirement to set up a meeting between waring crime families only to turn into a target himself. It’s a mean streets saga that previously attracted attention from the likes of Martin Scorsese, who was set to make it at Paramount Pictures with Robert De Niro, only to abandon it in favor of “The Irishman”; as well as Michael Mann and William Friedkin.

‘The Bear’ season two first reviews: “There’s no sophomore slump on this menu”

The Bear season two are out, with critics praising new episodes as “electrifying” and “fresh”.The FX show’s first season, created by Christopher Storer, followed award-winning chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) who returns to run his family’s Italian beef sandwich shop following the suicide of his older brother. The second season picks up after Carmy’s decision to close the shop in order to open a new restaurant, with an official synopsis sharing: “Season two follows Carmy, Sydney and Richie as they work to transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they strip the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertakes transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future.”Early critics’ reviews of the new series are positive, which has given the show a 100 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.Rolling Stone described season two as “electrifying” while avoiding a “sophomore slump”.“The new season has its moments, and even whole episodes, that might not be healthy viewing for anyone under a cardiologist’s care, but the tone is often much lighter, and at times plain joyous,” Alan Sepinwall wrote.Variety said season two “keeps up the heat” and wisely gets out of the kitchen”.

Not So Funny: Why the Emmy Comedy Categories Are Losing Nominees This Year

Actor in a Drama Series increased from 94 last year to 102 this year, and Emmy rules say that gender-divided categories  should have parity in the number of nominees, which will keep the guest actress category at six.Overall, more than half the categories that are shrinking in size this year are specifically devoted to comedy – and others, including Character Voice-Over Performance and Sound Editing and Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half Hour) and Animation, are dominated by comedic shows.Other categories that are slated to shrink include Outstanding Reality Competition Program and Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, both of which are dropping from six nomination slots to five, as well as Main Title Design, Music Supervision and Original Music and Lyrics.Only a handful of categories are in line to grow in size, including Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Scripted Variety Series (which has different qualifying requirements this year) and Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.Overall, more than half the Emmys’ 120 categories had fewer entries than they did last year, while only 30 had more entries. But in most cases, the change in the number of entries was not enough to trigger a change in the number of nominees.(Note: While the Emmy rules set the number of nominees by the number of contenders, several categories each year will end up with more or fewer nominees because of ties.)The result of this year’s submissions will make some of the comedy races even more competitive than they already were.
