A new study looking at the best 'hidden beaches' from around the world has picked out not one, but two secluded Scottish locations among its top 10.
With searches increasing online for holiday locations that are 'off the beaten track' and more and more people looking for Instagram-worthy beaches where they can be the first among their friends to discover, those going on holiday across the UK are seeking secluded beaches and little pieces of paradise that they can explore away from the crowds.
To discover the world's most beautiful, secluded and secretive beaches, Sun Bingo has collated a unique seed list of 37 of the world’s best ‘hidden’ beaches, extracting individual Instagram hashtags to find the least tagged beaches, officially ranking the best secret beaches to visit in these last days of summer – and Scotland has two of the best ‘hidden’ beaches in the world.
Beaches in California, Ogliastra in Italy and Burgas in Bulgaria topped the list, but according to the research, Scotland was also one of the top ranking countries where you’ll find the most hidden beaches.
Both the absolutely stunning Sandwood Bay in Sutherland, which placed in fifth overall, and the unspoilt and wild Vatersay (8th) in the Outer Hebrides were named in the top 10. They were the only UK beaches to make the shortlist.
And though we shout about them a lot, both are truly worthy entrants and deserve their lofty positions.

Angus Finney “Computers are useless,” Pablo Picasso exclaimed more than 50 years ago. “They can only give you answers.” No doubt he would be turning in his grave at today’s alliance of computer programs, tech companies and digital artists clustering together to create non-fungible tokens (NFTs). It’s a quickly evolving and potentially very risky world for filmmakers, producers and others looking for new ways to raise funding but should be approached with caution, research and a good look at recent history. NFTs — in case you need reminding — are digital artworks and images, often carved up into bite-sized tokens, that rely on blockchain technology to prove ownership. The explosion in interest and speculation around NFTs and the wider crypto currency craze that heated up during the previous decade has now spectacularly imploded over the past six months, with more than $2 trillion wiped out. The burst bubble in digital assets and decentralized finance (DeFi) has attracted acute attention, but also pain for millions of investors given that by mid-2021 more than 16% of the American population had bought into the crypto craze.
