Nick Owen has shared how tough it was to tell his children about his cancer, but he believes it's important they know. He now wants more men to get checked for prostate cancer and not be afraid to talk about it.
The TV presenter, 76, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2023, has admitted that he had some hard talks with his three sons; Andy, Tim and Chris, following the diagnosis. Nick also has a daughter named Jenny.
Despite having been treated successfully, Nick worries about his sons because the disease can run in families. "I've been through the middle of it. And I realised that the sooner you get seen the better," he explained.
Talking to The Mirror, the former TV-AM presenter continued: "We had an MRI, there was a hint there was something going on.
Then I had a biopsy. And that would tell us that it was really nasty and aggressive. And we need to do something quickly.
Telling my children was difficult.
I've got four children, three are our boys, two in their forties and one in their late thirties, and it was quite emotional." "Also, as far as the boys are concerned, it's a warning because it can be a hereditary thing. I'm very keen for my boys to be extremely on the case. I'll work on them to go earlier than 50, to be honest, to have the PSA tests.
And the message has to be if you have got any hint of a worry, get someone to look at it." Nick is best known for working on TV-AM in the 1980s where he co-hosted the show with Anne Diamond. Heartbreakingly, Anne also revealed last year that she had been diagnosed with breast caner. He has also been one of the lead presenters BBC's Midlands Today since 1997.
