A thug once dubbed ‘Scotland’s Worst Teenager’ has been jailed for 12 months after being caught in possession of a kitchen knife.
Gavin Inkster had been ejected from an Edinburgh Sainsbury’s Local branch when he told staff he was carrying a blade.
Police snared him nearby and learned Inkster had downed 40 valium tablets before committing the offence.
The 31-year-old gained notoriety in 2009 when he was slapped with an Asbo banning him from the whole of Midlothian after terrorising neighbours.
Four years later Inkster was convicted of a sex attack on a girl under 13.
He appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday after sentencing was deferred for reports.
Sheriff Alistair Noble jailed Inkster for one year.
Inkster admitted charges of knife possession and threatening or abusive behaviour at a hearing last month.
During that hearing, fiscal depute Jennifer McLaren said Inkster told the shop worker he had a knife while reaching into his jacket pocket.
The worker didn’t see the knife, Ms McLaren said, but his colleague did.
The prosecutor said police were called following the incident in Causewayside, Newington, on October 11.
Officers traced Inkster nearby, the court heard, and found him carrying the kitchen knife with a four-inch blade.
Ms McLaren said Inkster was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries to his left arm.
Defence agent Christopher MacFarlane told last month’s hearing that his client had consumed a “significant” quantity of alcohol and drugs and has taken 40 valium tablets.
Mr MacFarlane said Inkster, a labourer and ground worker, had been self-harming using the knife which explained his arm wounds.
Inkster already had two convictions involving weapons from 2016 and 2018.
