When keeping an eye on your overall health, it's important to be on the lookout for certain symptoms or changes that could be a sign of a serious problem.
But some health problems are hard to detect, as the symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for something else.
One of these is a thyroid issue, which is said to affect one in 20 people in the UK. Despite it affecting this amount of people, many are unaware of some of the early warning signs, as they're easily confused with other, less serious conditions.
The thyroid is a small gland in the front of the neck which plays a big role in the body’s function.
It produces hormones which help to convert the food you consume into energy, which influences growth, development, and temperature regulation.
An imbalanced thyroid, whether because it is producing too many or too few hormones, can trigger numerous health problems. Thyroid issues can include hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), nodules and even cancer.
To help people become more aware of the problem, Llinos Connolly, Clinical Services Sister at Benenden Health, has shared some of the lesser-known signs to look out for.
Sensitivity to the cold
Being cold is a common feeling, especially as winter approaches, but it could be a sign of something more.
