Almost three months after Bury’s indoor market hall was suddenly forced to close after dangerous concrete was found in the roof, the majority of affected traders have now been relocated. On October 26, 49 stallholders had their livelihoods snatched away and were thrown into uncertainty after the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the roof.
After weeks of not trading, coinciding with the busiest time of the year before Christmas, a raft of stallholders are now finding their feet again after working with market management and the council to relocate nearby. Bury Council gave an update this week saying 27 stalls are now back trading in the external units of the market hall, in premises owned by the council or on the outdoor market.
The authority said 10 are waiting for relocation into the Mill Gate centre with a spokesman saying ‘we hope all of those will be in by the end of January, as soon as the necessary repairs, checks and legalities are completed’.
Two of the traders have currently declined help and the other 10 affected stallholders have opted to find their own alternatives and return to the indoor market once it reopens. One of the relocated businesses is Spencer’s Tobacconist, run by Suresh and Bhanu Varma which is now at 6-10 Princess Parade, the former Sue Ryder shop, along with four other fellow market traders. .
Bhanu, said: “We’d like to say a massive thank you to the wonderful folk of Bury and beyond for supporting our business through a challenging year.
