Thora Birch is opening up about the legacy of Now And Then, which came out in 1995, when she was just 13.
The now 40-year-old actress caught up with US Weekly about the film, which also starred Christina Ricci, Gaby Hoffman and the late Ashleigh Aston Moore, and recalled what it was like filming the movie.

Looking back at shooting the film in 1994, Thora recalled that “learning how to ride a bike was probably a highlight.”
“As an L.A. girl, that’s not really part of your experience too much, riding around,” she explained to the outlet. “But for all four of us, I think we really tapped into that sense of enjoying the freedom that these young women had back then. They were able to just get on their bike and drive for, like, two, three miles or something like that. And that was a long journey for them. This was a huge, huge endeavor.”
While that was a fond memory of the movie for her, she also pointed out that the four young girls were exactly the ages of their characters, which contributed to some friction towards each at the time.
“If I’m being honest, the thing was we were all 12 to 14 years old when we were making that film. And if anybody knows anything about 12 to 14-year-old girls, it doesn’t go well,” she said.
But all in all, Thora says, it was a big movie for her to make and had a profound impact on her career.
“[It was a] defining moment in my life,” Thora says. “When you’re living it, it doesn’t seem like so much. It seems just like, ‘Well, this is life, this is what happens.’ But then when you look back, you’re, like, ‘Wow, that was a really beautiful space I was able to live in.’”
Unfortunately, Now and Then is not streaming on Netflix. You can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes,
