When you're comfortable, it's easy to get stuck in a routine. You go out with the same friends to the same pubs, bars, and restaurants and do the same things. There's nothing wrong with knowing what you like, but it can feel like living your life on autopilot. Safe, but not entirely stimulating.
So in an effort to broaden our horizons, a couple of friends and I went to our first ever live comedy night. The event was a female and non-binary stand-up show, and honestly, I had a blast. Watching these performers of all different ages be able to explore their passion in such a safe and welcoming space was a reminder of both the kindness and the creativity Manchester is known for.

Several of the acts are set to perform at the upcoming Manchester Women in Comedy Festival, which takes place in just a week - so if you're interested in having a laugh while supporting some fantastic female comedians, you can check it out here.
On a more sombre note, many of these women spoke of the abuse they have suffered during their comedy journey - and in a week where derogatory comments made about a female journalist were broadcast on live TV, it's a reminder of how important these safe spaces can be.
From small events like this comedy night, to organisations like the George House Trust and Mustard Tree, there are so many people out there providing crucial safe spaces in our city. Thanks so much for everything you do - we see you.
