Holly Willoughby was baffled when Dr Cannon revealed that you can’t throw tablets away on This Morning. Dr Cannon was on the show to discuss the difference between branded and non-branded medications.
Holly and Alison Hammond, who is filling in for Phillip Schofield as he recovers from Covid-19, were shocked to learn that despite the hefty price difference the generic and branded drugs are essentially the same. The conversation involved a lot of revelations for Holly, 40, as the doctor told This Morning viewers that expired tablets should not be thrown away.

Alison, 47, asked: “Could the date be different? Could the expiry date be sooner?” Dr Cannon replied: “No, so everything’s regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council and the other drugs body… of course, check the best before date, absolutely.” Holly was shocked to learn that tablets even expired, as she admitted: “I didn’t even know that was a thing on tablets, until I read that there and I was like oh my god is there?” “I’ve probably got stuff lurking at the back of my medicine cabinet.” “You need to go through it,” Alison replied. Dr Cannon explained that expired medication doesn’t work, it’s “disintegrated” and like other substances they “go off” after a certain period of time and “don’t work anymore.” Alison revealed that her step-dad was also guilty of hanging on to old medicine, she even joked that he still had “paracetamol from 1920” in his cupboard that he would need to throw away.
