Police have made 13 arrests after a feisty football derby between Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers over the weekend.
Chaotic scenes erupted in Wigan following the match on Saturday (April 2), which ended in a 1-1 draw. Wanderers fans were kept inside the stadium while Latics supporters left the ground, before being escorted by officers to Wigan Wallgate railway station.
A huge police presence was reported outside the station as crowds gathered along Wallgate. Violence then reportedly flared up in the town centre.

GMP says nine people were arrested as part of the main policing operation for the match, either at DW Stadium or between the ground and Wallgate following the game. They include four people who have since been charged:

The behaviour has been condemned by Lee Broadbent, chair of GMP's branch of the Police Federation union. He wrote on Twitter: "Some football fans. We’ve seen a rise in football related disorder within GMP which not only impacts on those decent fans attending the game, but also has a knock on for officers policing them re numbers and increased cancelled rest days to ensure safe policing. #ItsNotOn"
The reverse fixture, which saw Wanderers thumped 4-0 by Latics, had also been marred by trouble - with the referee stopping the game at one point as objects were thrown onto the University of Bolton Stadium pitch. A decision was taken to move Saturday's game from a 3pm kick-off to 12.30pm three weeks before the fixture.
