Reneé Rapp got real about a dark period of her career.
Before releasing music and starring in The Sex Lives of College Girls, the 23-year-old songstress first got her big break by portraying queen bee Regina George on Broadway‘s Mean Girls at only 19 years old. While most would think this would have been the thrill of a lifetime, Reneé’s experience wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Instead, it sounds like she went through hell as she dealt with some IRL mean girls.

In an interview with The Guardian published on Wednesday, the Too Well singer claimed she was often body-shamed by people in production during her run on the musical. She told the outlet she was struggling with an eating disorder at the time. And her battle with it worsened as the team “would say some vile f**king things to me about my body.” WTF! In the words of Gretchen Wieners, that’s so NOT fetch!!!
According to Reneé, the body shaming got so bad before the coronavirus pandemic that her parents had to go to New York City to try to take her out of the show “for fear of what it was doing to her health.” So, so awful. Leaving Mean Girls ended up being the right choice for her overall health. However, her parents are “more worried than they ever have been” as the Tattoos artists shifted her focus from acting to music “because they know more now.” Reneé explained they’re also concerned for her since she is still struggling with her eating disorder:

The incident occurred during a night out with a group of new friends in early 2022.Her close friends and family had warned her about these new friends, but Rapp explained that she was enjoying a newfound sense of freedom at the time following a break-up.“I really let my judgment go when it came to the people that were around me,” the 23-year-old star of The Sex Lives Of College Girls said.“We were all out, and it was just situation after situation where they were just not trustworthy, and then the next thing you knew, I was face up, laying down in a bathroom stall in a hotel bar, just waking up at 5 in the morning, completely alone.”Rapp told the podcast’s host that she woke up confused with blood on her underwear and had two missed text messages from people she had been out with the night before.

Ethan Shanfeld Reneé Rapp opened up about struggling with an eating disorder during her tenure in the “Mean Girls” musical, which was exacerbated by production staffers who, she said, “would say some vile fucking things to me about my body.” In a new interview with The Guardian, the actor turned singer said her health was deteriorating to the point that her parents flew to New York to try to pull Rapp out of the show, which opened on Broadway in April 2018 and wrapped up early in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Rapp played Regina George in the Broadway production and will reprise the role in a movie musical adaptation written by Tina Fey, to be released on Paramount+.
