A lost shopping centre just minutes away from Greater Manchester was loved by generations of adults and kids.
Botany Bay was a huge shopping and leisure complex in Chorley, Lancashire, and had everything you could imagine, even a massive play area for children. Based in a former mill alongside the Leeds Liverpool Canal, it was simple to get to from Greater Manchester located just off the M61.
The landmark five-floor mill dates back to 1885 but was transformed into a shopping centre in 1995, selling everything from clothes and gifts to furniture. The complex also had a garden centre as well as a café, restaurant, and hosted food and drinks festivals and Christmas markets.

The Christmas events were incredibly popular, hosting numerous guests each year, including the Mischievous Elves, Anna and Elsa from Frozen, and reindeers from the Cairngorms. Of course, no Christmas market would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus himself.
Situated inside Botany Bay was Café 1855 - perfect for coffee, sandwiches and cakes - as well as Smethurst Restaurant on the fourth floor for those wanting a more substantial meal. There was also a food hall full of independent, artisanal food producers including a bakery, butchers and ice cream maker.
But the reason Botany Bay was most loved by kids was for its giant indoor soft play centre, Puddletown Pirates. Located inside the retail centre, it was the largest children's play centre in Britain when it opened.
