With cobbled walkways, ancient bridges and eerie ruins, this hauntingly beautiful village is almost entirely frozen in time. And while visitors are free to roam the narrow lanes of Wycoller in Lancashire, cars are banned.
Wycoller has a fascinating history as a "lost village". It was abandoned by its former residents during the Industrial Revolution when they moved out to the nearby textile boom towns of Lancashire.
But its wild beauty has inspired visitors for centuries, including the Bronte Sisters, who would regularly walk here from their home in Haworth. The village's "haunted" hall is also said to have inspired Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bronte's literary masterpiece Jane Eyre.

In more recent years, the 14 surviving cottages in Wycolller have once again been brought back to life, while the village itself is now a designated Country Park. But due to the numbers of visitors it attracts, and the narrow lanes with cobbled sections, the decision was taken to ban cars entering - aside from residents and vehicles requiring access.
There are, however, two main car parks situated on the edge of the village at Trawden Road and Haworth Road. Here visitors can pay-and-display and then walk the scenic mile-or-so into the village centre.
Wycoller, near Colne, was once a handloom weavers' village - but during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century was abandoned by its residents who moved out to the nearby textile-boom towns of Lancashire to ply their trade. Those residents were never to return - and over the years 35 buildings fell derelict and were ultimately lost.
