The Queen is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this weekend, marking 70 years of her reign. While the event is bound to be full of plenty of joyous moments for the longest reigning monarch in British history, it will also be the first milestone the Queen is celebrating without Prince Philip by her side.The Queen became a widow last year when Prince Philip died aged 99 after 73 years of marriage. She previously paid tribute to her beloved husband calling him her “strength and stay” over the years.

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II has been released in order to mark the start of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The specially commissioned portrait sees Her Majesty, 96, smiling in the Victoria Vestibule at Windsor Castle, with the Castle’s Round Tower, and the statue of King Charles II, which stands in the Quadrangle of the Castle, both visible in the background.

Meanwhile, staff at Buckingham Palace are "determined" to help the Queen reach the famous balcony for Trooping The Colour, with new lifts reportedly having been installed inside the 3,000-year-old palace.

But it's bittersweet, as The Queen will be without her beloved husband Prince Philip at all of the events, after he passed away aged 99 last April.

Their reunion this week is only temporary, meant to commemorate their return to the UK to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 70-year reign. «It felt only right that our figures come together once more on our Royal Throne Room set to join in the family festivities,» Tim Waters, Madame Tussauds London general manager, said in a statement. «We have a long history with The Royal Family, with British monarchs doing us the honour of sitting for our artists since 1809.

The Queen will reportedly not take the royal salute at the Trooping the Colour next month for the first time in 70 years. According to new reports over the weekend, Her Majesty, 96, has delegated the special responsibility to other senior members of the Royal Family.

While The Queen has to remain neutral in many areas of her life and is unable to voice personal opinions on topics including politics, there are a few things she's able to pick favourites from. And one of them, of course, is food. Queen Elizabeth II is a creature of habit when it comes to cooking and a former royal cook has revealed that she loves one particular sandwich style so much that she has eaten them constantly since she was a little girl.
