New data has revealed that students are skiving at a North West school once every seven days on average. The primary school near Ormskirk which had an unauthorised absence rate of 14.7 per cent last year has suffered the highest level of truancy in the county.
Downholland-Haskayne Voluntary Aided CE Primary School in West Lancashire had the worst truancy rate of any state-run primary or secondary school in Lancashire during the autumn and spring terms of the 2022/23 school year. The data has revealed that students at the small primary school missed the equivalent of 485 days of school through unauthorised absences over the two academic terms.
The data released by the Department for Education, reported by LancsLive, reveals that South Shore Academy in Blackpool had the next highest rate, with 12.1 per cent of sessions missed. That’s followed by Blackpool Aspire Academy (7.6 per cent), Highfield Leadership Academy (6.9 per cent), The Valley Leadership Academy (6.7 per cent), and Darwen Vale High School (6.5 per cent).

Only 2.2 per cent of absences in England were unauthorised last year. There were a total of 41,625 students who were persistently absent in Lancashire last year.
That works out as 20.8 per cent of pupils in Lancashire. A student is classed as persistently absent if they miss 10 per cent of sessions or more in an academic year.
