Aretha Franklin has proven that the bureau extensively tracked the late singer’s civil rights activism.The 270-page document features reports on the singer from more than 12 US states, and focuses on her friendship with Martin Luther King as well as death threats made against her and a copyright case involving a Yahoo! Groups fan site.The document, which is available to view here, shows that Franklin was monitored ahead of and around her appearances at civil rights movement events, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.The events took place in the late 1960s in Atlanta, Georgia and Memphis, Tennessee respectively, and were referred to by the FBI in the document as “communist infiltration” events.Elsewhere, Franklin was referenced in a note titled: “Assassination of Martin Luther King. Racial matters,” and notes were made of her involvement in a planned memorial concert for the famous activist.

Rolling Stone earlier this week, Dolenz filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on June 14, asking for any documents about the Monkees, but other than an automated statement of receipt, he didn’t receive a response from the FBI within the 20-business day waiting period as required by law. Turns out that The Monkees were in fact the subject of at least two FBI reports as listed on the bureau’s website, including one from 1967 pertaining to anti-Vietnam War activities and for another document that was redacted entirely.

In a lawsuit filed this week, he says that he has attempted to gain this information via a Freedom Of Information Act request, but has so far had no response beyond an acknowledgement that his request was received in June.Dolenz has launched the lawsuit because, he says, he has exhausted all other avenues, despite being “entitled to timely receipt of nonexempt copies of all records responsive to his [request]”, according to Law360.He also hints in the lawsuit at what he plans to do with the information he seeks, saying that he “has the ability to disseminate information on a wide scale and may use information obtained through his request in an original work, particularly an independent film, documentary or book”.Now, you might be thinking, “Pfft! The FBI probably doesn’t even have any files on The Monkees”.

Taylor Swift is being sued by a poet and author named Teresa La Dart who claims a book Swift released alongside her 2019 album ‘Lover’ copied elements of La Dart’s book of the same name.In a complaint filed in Tennessee federal court on August 23, La Dart claims that “a number of creative elements” from her book – a collection of “poems, anecdotes and photos” self-published in 2010 – were copied in Swift’s book that accompanies a deluxe version of her ‘Lover’ album.As the Daily Mail reports, in the filing, La Dart alleges Swift copied both “the vibe and design” of her own book, as well as its “format” of “a recollection of past years memorialized in a combination of written and pictorial components”.In her allegations, La Dart specifically references the similarities of both books sharing a title, having covers that use “pastel pinks and blues”, images of their author “photographed in a downward pose” and the designs comprising of “interspersed photographs and writings”.La Dart is reportedly seeking in “excess of one million dollars” in damages.NME has reached out to representatives for Swift for comment.
