Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 8 season premiere, part one, of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Sept. 21 on Fox. Two legends exited “The Masked Singer” in week 1 of the show’s Season 8 — and both have a lot to say about it. “Monty Python” star Eric Idle, eliminated as the Hedgehog, shared that he recently survived pancreatic cancer, and he has partnered with Stand Up to Cancer to help spread the word on cancer research. And then there’s 91-year-old William Shatner, who didn’t last long as the Knight, but after a rough experience trying to sing in that costume, he’s more than happy to talk instead about the multitude of other projects he’s got going right now.
“I worked very hard on the syncopation on the beautiful lyric and all,” said Shatner, who performed “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” “And then putting on that costume, I couldn’t move my legs, they were leaden. I couldn’t see where the dancers were, and I couldn’t hear the music. Everything went out the window the moment I put the wardrobe on. “So all that work of learning that song… none of it mattered because it all went to hell in that bloody wardrobe,” he added. “If I had to do it over again, I would still choose that song. But I would choose a different wardrobe, a ballet costume. Just tights and ballet slippers are all I need.” Shatner nonetheless was his cheeky self on the show — which even slipped a reference to host Nick Cannon’s baby making skills into Shatner’s voice over. “I can’t believe it’s taken me eight seasons to be on ‘the Masked Singer.’ I was holding out for the hosting gig, but Nick keeps having babies, so I guess he isn’t going anywhere.” Zing! Shatner said he really agreed

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Yes, there’s still a Fall TV season, and yes, it’s now well under way. Broadcast TV got a little pep in its step last year thanks to two freshman sitcom phenoms: ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and CBS’ “Ghosts.” When asked to tout their new wares, several network execs instead opted to shine more spotlight on returning shows they hope to keep buzzing as sophomore sensations. It’s time for Variety’s annual fall check-in with network heads across broadcast, cable and streaming — although how to do that proves tricky these days. Many execs’ gigs transcend platforms, after all — like Disney’s Craig Erwich, who serves as entertainment president for both ABC and Hulu, or the NBCUniversal duo of Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick, whose domain stretches across programming for broadcast, network and streaming.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Pop, pop the champagne: Maybe it’s not the darkest timeline after all, as “six seasons and a movie” is finally becoming reality. Peacock has ordered a movie based on the Dan Harmon comedy “Community,” bringing back original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong to check in on what the gang from Greendale has been up to since the show ended in 2015. Without sharing specifics, Peacock and Sony Pictures TV, which jointly announced the greenlight on Friday, described the negotiations for Peacock to secure the movie as “heavily competitive.” As part of the deal, Peacock has also acquired non-exclusive rights to the full six-season “Community” library, which can also be found on Netflix and Hulu.

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large CBS is screening the Season 2 premiere of “Ghosts” in theaters across the country — and you’re not invited. Well, unless you’re dead. In a marketing stunt tied to this Thursday’s return of the hit Eye comedy, the season opener of “Ghosts” is being showcased in the middle of the night at venues in Los Angeles, Savannah, Ga., and Portland, Ore., but to empty seats. Instead, CBS is inviting actual ghosts to view the show — mortals be damned. “We are using social media and we’ve got some mediums and some other folks that we’re using to put the word out to people who are not amongst the living, to stop by any of these theaters and attend the screenings,” says CBS chief marketing officer Mike Benson.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 8, episode 2, of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Sept. 28 on Fox. The Hummingbird was revealed to be Kirkpatrick, while Pi-Rat was Dunham and Jordan was Panther. Kirkpatrick was a leftover unmasking from last week; after that, among this week’s three performances, Dunham was first to go, with the fewest number of votes.

That series, which won an Emmy in 2020 for outstanding writing for a nonfiction program, centered on a group of amateur internet sleuths who launch a manhunt to find a suspect accused of animal cruelty — and worse.
