The first victim's body was discovered shortly after 3pm on April 11, 1905, by a rag gatherer named David Shields. He was gathering rags on Hoyle Street, Ancoats when he noticed that the door was open on one of the unoccupied houses.
When he went inside he was greeted by the battered body of a young boy. The victim’s mouth was stuffed with paper and a red handkerchief was tied around the head to keep the paper in place.

All the boy's clothes were torn and his index fingernail had been torn off indicating signs of a struggle. Placed over the body was a blood stained brick – probably the murder weapon.
After his description - a young male, 5ft tall, brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion - was issued by the police the victim was identified as 15‐year‐old Thomas Smith
