Sarah Paulson On Winning Her First Tony Award & How Theaters “Bear Witness to Relentless Interrogation Of Human Experience”

Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson is now the proud new owner of a Tony, too. The actress best known for her work in the American Horror Story franchise took home the gold Sunday for Best Actress in a Play for her work in Appropriate.“As a young actress I remember seeing Janet McTeer burst on the stage in A Doll’s House in the very theater I am currently living in,” said Paulson about doing Appropriate at the Belasco Theatre in NYC. “And some nights when I’m backstage I think about the indelible impact of her. I think about the walls of theaters all over this magical town holding the impact of each and every one of you in this room, and all of those who came before and I think how lucky those walls are to bear witness to the relentless interrogation of human experience that we endeavor to explore nightly for each other, to give back to one another with the hope of finding some shared path towards the truth about being alive. This is the heart and soul of what we do, and I am so honored to be amongst you.”

Broadway‘s busy, busy 2023-24 season has been building to Sunday night for months, with new show after new show crowding the spring and making for what promises to be — in some categories anyway — a race tighter than the rock band of Stereophonic. Ok, maybe not that tight, but what is?

reported last June that Tony-winning “Shucked” actor Alex Newell strolled in at 6 a.m.“It was already ‘Last call.’ The hotel venue was officially shutting. And in flounces Alex,” Cindy wrote.Unhinged glamor is the vibe of the gathering, hosted by PR man Rick Miramontez and his husband, Jamie DuMont, since 2009, when it was a more intimate (and secret) affair in the Royal Suite with the ragtag hippies of “Hair.” Their 15-year-old soiree, which is also co-hosted by John Gore, was inspired by the wild dinners Joan Didion and her husband would throw in Malibu, Calif., during the 1960s and ’70s, when they’d make 2 a.m.

Kneecap explain their decision to play The Great Escape over boycott: “You can’t de-platform yourself”

Kneecap have discussed their reasons for not participating in the boycott of The Great Escape last month.Over 100 artists pulled out of the Brighton festival over its sponsorship by Barclays, which has been accused of financial ties to companies arming Israel. However, the bank claims it is “trading in shares of listed companies in response to client instruction or demand”.The Irish rap trio’s decision was caused some controversy online given that they have always taken a stand against what they call Israel’s “occupation and genocide” of Gaza. They helped to raise nearly £100,000 for a volunteer gym in the Aida Refugee Camp in Palestine and spoken publicly about it via social media and a message shared after a high-profile appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. They have also made headlines for ignoring Irish public broadcaster RTÉ’s requests to not wear pro-Palestine badges.Kneecap did participate in the boycott of SXSW (after the UK government withdrew arts funding to get them to get there; resulting in a legal battle) after discovering the US military was supporting the festival.

‘The Great Lillian Hall’ Review: Jessica Lange Is Grand as a Legendary Stage Actress Confronting Dementia

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is.

Jessica Lange Talks ‘Mother Play’, Bad Moms & How To Mesmerize An Audience With 12 Minutes Of Silence – Deadline Q&A

Towards the end of Paula Vogel’s hit Broadway drama Mother Play, all dialogue comes to a halt for 12 long, mesmerizing minutes, and Jessica Lange is on stage, alone, for every second of them. Her character Phyllis – the mother of the title, based on the mother of the playwright – has alienated her two adult children, Martha (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Carl (Jim Parsons), after a lifetime of pretty odious behavior, most damningly her abandonment of the son she seemingly loved as he’s dying of AIDS. Set in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, Mother Play, directed by Tina Landau, is based on Vogel’s real-life family events, including the death of her beloved brother, and knowing the source only makes the tragedy onstage more affecting.

Oh-oh, here she comes: John Oates spills all about the woman behind Hall & Oates’ ‘Maneater’

John Oates revisited Electric Lady Studios — the legendary recording mecca in Greenwich Village, Manhattan where Hall & Oates made many of their ‘80s classics — he got back in touch with one particular hit. That would be “Maneater,” the longest-running of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame duo’s six No. 1 singles.Released in October 1982 as the first single from Hall & Oates’ double-platinum “H2O” album, the song was inspired by a woman who Oates encountered back in those wild Village days — decades before his and Daryl Hall’s shocking band split last fall.“A couple streets over, there was a restaurant called Marylou’s, and it was a late-night hang,” Oates, 76, exclusively told The Post outside of Electric Lady Studios, where the twosome recorded 1981’s “Private Eyes” and 1984’s “Big Bam Boom” in addition to 1982’s “H2O.”“And I was in there one night with a group of friends sitting at a table, and this gal came in, and she was absolutely drop-dead gorgeous,” he recalled.

“Don’t you trust me?” It’s a routine question from the man they call Boss, a ruthless character operating at the lower levels of the immigrant trade in Taiwan, adopted home of director Chiang Wei Liang. Nobody trusts Boss (Daniel Hong Yu-Hong), least of all his Thai sidekick Oom (Wanlop Rungkumjad). Perhaps because he is decent and reliable, Oom has been charged with keeping the other workers in their miserable hostel in order. It falls to him to explain why Boss’ own boss, the vile Brother Te, has failed to pay anybody their wages.
