The country walk near Greater Manchester ending in a pub perfect for New Year’s Day

Going for a walk on New Year’s Day is an annual tradition. For those who’ve had a heavy night of partying it's a chance to blow the cobwebs away and a hearty walk outside can leave you feeling invigorated - setting you up for the year ahead.
What makes a country walk even better is ending it with a visit to a cosy pub where you can tuck into a delicious meal afterwards. If this sounds right up your street then we’ve got just the walk for you, and it’s not far from Greater Manchester either.
Nestled on the edge of the Peak District, the village of Hayfield is a great starting point for a circular walk up Lantern Pike. It’s a route that takes in stunning countryside views, while the climb up the pike is well-worth making an effort for.

From Hayfield pick up the Sett Valley Trail, which follows an old railway line. The route takes you past the small Birch Vale Reservoir where you can enjoy views across the water.
Then you’ll climb up Lantern Pike, which stands at 373m high. On a clear day you can even see as far as the Manchester skyline. From here you can descend back the same route, or return via Little Hayfield.
Once you’re back in Hayfield itself, you can round off your walk with a visit to The Pack Horse Pub. Last year the pub was named one of the best gastropubs in the UK, ranking at 32 in a list of 50.
The Michelin-guide recommended pub is known for its excellent selection of dishes and seasonal menus, sourcing ingredients from local suppliers. But don’t let its fine-dining reputation put you off, as you’re equally
