A Greater Manchester NHS chief issued a public statement on Wednesday night (January 3) as hospitals across the region face huge pressures and long waits at A&E.

The NHS has warned that the strike, which could see up to half of the medical workforce in England walk out, could lead to “the most difficult start to the year the NHS has ever faced”.
Mark Fisher, chief executive at NHS Greater Manchester, said the strike action is having 'a significant impact on all services' and that services across the region were seeing high demand, with A&E 'extremely busy'. He again warned that the department should only be attended in the cases of 'serious accidents and emergencies'
It comes as Amanda Ahmed, Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing for Urgent and Emergency Care at the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust issued a similar warning.
Mr Fisher said in his statement on Wednesday: “We are currently seeing high demand for our services, and accident and emergency departments (A&E) at our local hospitals are all extremely busy. People with less urgent conditions are therefore likely to experience longer than average waiting times.
