The bridge was first suggested as part of a regeneration project near Murrays Mill. In 2008 architects were invited to put forward ideas for a competition run by developers Urban Splash.
Because of its unusual location, at a T junction of the canal and entrance to the marina, the bridge needed to connect three points, Redhill Street and opposite sides of the towpath. To bridge the gap winning architects Gollifer Langston came up with a boomerang shaped structure made of perforated metal.
"The design aims to create an intriguing addition to complement the historic canal side warehouses of Ancoats and the contemporary architecture of the new development," their website states. "The footbridge is designed to run over the Rochdale Canal connecting three crossing points with limited clearances in a fluid and economical structure."
