Damp is an annoying issue in many households and that causes a variety of problems from unpleasant smells and peeling wallpaper. If you leave damp untreated, mould can grow, which can cause health issues for anyone leaving in the home.
It’s incredibly important that homeowners are able to correctly identify and mitigate damp in their home. This is why Toolstation has created a guide to help homeowners identify the signs of damp and how to prevent it within their homes.
According to the experts, there are three different types of damp:
Rising damp
Penetrating damp
Condensation
Rising damp happens when moisture creeps up through your floors and walls. This type of damp is typically caused by poor drainage underground, or high groundwater levels.
Penetrating damp occurs when water seeps through the ceilings and high walls, due to structural issues. Causes include leaky pipes, cracks, as well as roof and gutter problems.
And finally, which is most likely the more common of the three, condensation tends to occur in humid rooms like the kitchen and the bathroom. Condensation is caused by warm, damp air settling on cold walls.
There are many different signs of damp, and these all depend on what type of damp is occurring in your home. In order to help people identify damp in their homes, Toolstation compiled a list of the main warning signs to look out for.
For rising damp, look out for the following signs:
Traces of tide marks moving up the wall
Paint and wallpaper peeling, often with damp patches
Raised floor coverings
Plaster and skirting boards showing signs of damage
Presence of a white, powdery substance due to dissolved
