As the Met Office released multiple weather warnings in wake of Storm Isha, knowing what to look out for and how to care for your car during this weather is essential.
Whether you’re a seasoned driver in a vintage classic or just starting out in your used Range Rover, keeping your car safe during a storm can be a difficult task.
From driving through floods to recognising the signs of flood damage, there’s plenty you need to know when you’re about to brace for this bad weather.
Read on below to find out more.
Before setting off on any journey, checking your brakes is essential, especially during storm weather. Whether you come up against a sudden flood or there’s debris in the road, making sure you can stop in an emergency is crucial. After driving through a body of water, test your brakes as soon as possible to ensure nothing is damaged and everything is in working order.
Floodwater should be taken slowly so that you don’t rush water into your car engine and risk it failing. You don’t want to be driving through moving water or water that is over four inches in depth, where possible – consult your owner’s handbook to check what wading depths your car can typically handle.
If you must go through standing, deep water, take it slowly and allow approaching cars to pass first where possible and safe to do so. You should also leave double the space you usually would, to account for longer slowing down times in wet conditions.
It is also important to notice when your car might be aquaplaning. Don’t panic and press on your brakes, but slowly ease off your accelerator and steer into it – this way, you can prevent losing control of your car.
If you do break down during a storm, avoid leaving your bonnet open while waiting.
