Tesco has confirmed that it is phasing out its six pint milk bottles in a bid to reduce food waste after shoppers noticed it missing from store shelves.
The supermarket chain made the announcement after shoppers flocked to Twitter, now rebranded as X, after they couldn't find the kitchen staple in store or online.
Tesco has now confirmed in a statement to the Mirror that it has officially discontinued the product due to higher levels of waste, with it now being unavailable to buy online or in-store.
One Twitter user @MrsHockallz asked the supermarket back in May: "@Tesco have you stopped selling six pint bottles of semi skimmed milk? Coming up as unavailable on app and none on shelf in store this morning".
Another user recently asked: "@Tesco is there a reason why I can no longer get 6pts of milk in stores? It’s now 4pt so I end up spending more by having to get 2? #CostOfLivingCrisis."
A spokesperson for Tesco told the Mirror: "We are phasing out six pint bottles of milk to reduce wastage, but our four pint bottles provide the same great value per pint, especially as we have reduced milk prices twice in recent weeks."
In April, the largest six pint bottle of milk cost £2.30 - this equates to 38p per pint. Meanwhile, a four pint of milk at Tesco currently costs £1.45 which is around 36p a pint.
It comes just after Tesco dropped the price of its milk for the first time since 2020. The supermarket said it was passing on the reduction to its customers after buying prices for the staple fell.
The move was quickly followed by other major supermarkets with Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Morrisons all announcing similar price cuts later that week.
