SXSW Review: ‘Linoleum’: Jim Gaffigan Flies High In Dual Roles In Quirky But Slight Family Sci-Fi Dramedy

He returns to his roots, reconnecting with his father Mozasu (Soji Arai), owner of a pachinko game parlor, and grandmother Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung), with a lens on the younger Sunja  (Minha Kim and Jeon Yuna), who leaves everything behind for a new life in Japan, a country that wants no part of her.Based on Min Jin Lee’s rich novel, the show, which premieres March 25 on Apple TV Plus, has been adapted by series creator Soo Hugh, who scripted the title sequence into her drafts.

Watching the new action comedy  The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent in which Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of , well, Nicolas Cage, I kept thinking that if  director Tom Gormican didn’t get him to agree to do this film which depends on audience recognition of a genuine action star, he could have easily gone to Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis. They would have been fine fulfilling the amusing premise, but Cage, as he usually does, goes all out, even over the top at times, and gives this the kind of sharp edge only he can. It also helps, since this is basically a comedy, that Cage’s manic timing (as in Honeymoon In Vegas for one) really works in making the best lines in Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten’s script work, especially the inside industry jokes peppered throughout.

Colin West’s “Linoleum” is the kind of movie that’s all but impossible to review with any specificity, because so much of its achievement lies in its surprises – how it seems to be doing one thing while slyly doing another, without deception, and then revealing its ultimate intentions with grace and style. This is the writer/director’s second film, and he displays a confidence and storytelling acumen that’s frankly inspiring.
