You can tell it’s spring.
In Vermont, sap flows out of maple trees. But for Hollywood, movies go off like fireworks in the Lone Star state at SXSW.
The third edition of the festival in Austin, TX, coming out of the pandemic (and ducking dual strikes) hasn’t lost its shine: When it comes to creating an ‘it’ movie for the spring or summer, SXSW remains a helluvah tastemaker event when it comes to stoking the 18-34 crowd.
It’s where A Quiet Place triggered its first screams before morphing into a $638M-plus franchise (the third film due this summer), and it’s where Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022 began its year-long journey to Oscars 2023, taking home several trophies including Best Picture; a first for any SXSW world premiere.
However, the one logistical headache here for the second year in a row is having the festival’s first weekend on Oscar Sunday. That obstacle prevents talent from coming in for the first part of the festival; many flying in post March 10. It also backloads the festival with big titles at a time when members of the press and other attendees have already gone home. Post Oscars last year such notable titles that premiered here included Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 and Joy Ride, New Line’s Evil Dead, and Amazon MGM Studio’s Air. Big stuff one normally finds at the front of a festival.
This year’s post-Oscar bookings at Austin’s Paramount Theatre include Universal’s Monkeypaw produced, Dev Patel directed, Monkey Man, as well as the studio’s summer kickoff David Leitch-directed title, The Fall Guy, with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, in addition to NEON’s Sydney Sweeney-as-a-nun horror movie, Immaculate. Michael Showalter, a SXSW standard, is closing the fest with his Anne Hathaway

Addie Morfoot Contributor In January, prolific songwriter Diane Warren received her 15th Academy Award nomination in the best song category for “The Fire Inside,” for the film “Flamin’ Hot,” directed by Eva Longoria. On March 10, Warren held onto her Oscar record in the category for more nominations without a single win when she lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for their “Barbie” song “What Was I Made For?” But Warren doesn’t have much time to wallow in self pity.

After “Elemental” was the studio’s biggest hit since “Toy Story 4,” Pixar hopes to continue its commercial bounce-back with another sequel, “Inside Out 2.” Smart move on Pixar’s part: the 2015 original film was the animation studio’s last true critical darling, making several critical top 10 lists that year. To be fair, other recent Pixar films have scored well with critics too, but “Inside Out 2” still needs fresh take on its premise for everyone to take it seriously.
