‘Supergirl’: ‘House Of The Dragon’ Star Milly Alcock Nabs DC Role

Wim Wenders On Oscar Nomination And “All Hell Breaking Loose” During Lockdown Inspiring Peace For Japanese Film ‘Perfect Days’

While in England, German director Wim Wenders was sandwiched between a press tour and a brief lunch when a member of his team walked into the restaurant to secretly signal across the room that he was nominated for his first feature film Oscar with Japan’s Best International Feature Film, Perfect Days. “Someone came in raising their thumb, which was the sign that we had agreed on, and no word was spoken because there were too many guests in the restaurant,” Wenders laughed while retelling the Tuesday nomination. “So, I knew then I could let that meal go a little cold. It was lovely because I had prepared myself to not expect anything. I had completely prepared myself to not be on the list so that I wouldn’t be disappointed. So [this nomination] was quite a surprise today.”

‘Winner’ Review: Emilia Jones Can’t Really Rescue An All-Too-Safe Biopic Treatment [Sundance]

The first line of “Winner” says it all: “My name is Reality Winner.” This uninspired introduction to the character, an NSA employee who leaked classified documents surrounding Russian election interference to the media, sets the tone for what’s to follow. Susanna Fogel’s film is not actively bad, just aggressively bland.

‘Winner’ Review: Susanna Fogel’s Playful Biopic Paints An Eye-Opening Portrait Of An Accidental Anarchist – Sundance Film Festival

Reality Winner is probably better known in Europe than the U.S., thanks in part to Tina Satter’s extraordinary arthouse film Reality (2023), which dramatized the 25-year-old Texan translator’s arrest in 2017 using the verbatim transcripts of her interactions with the FBI. Winner, a funny and surprisingly powerful biopic directed and co-written by Susanna Fogel, will go quite a long way towards raising her profile back home.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic The U.S. government decided to make an example of Reality Winner, giving the former NSA translator a five-year prison sentence. So it’s only fair that director Susanna Fogel should be able to make an example of her, too — only this time, to very different ends.

‘Superman: Legacy’: Rachel Brosnahan Promises “A Sense Of Humor” In James Gunn’s Film: “I Feel Like It’s Being Made With So Much Love”

After “Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom” ended the DCEU with a whimper (albeit a successful whimper relative to the DCEU’s other three 2023 releases), it’s time to look ahead to James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s franchise reboot. And the DCU can’t be a middling, clunky, and visually uninspired as the DCEU right? Well, let’s wait and see on that, considering audiences must wait until July 11, 2025 for Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy.”   READ MORE: ‘Superman: Legacy’: María Gabriela De Faria To Play Villain The Engineer As ‘Supergirl’ Finds New Writer But Variety reports (via Entertainment Tonight) that new Lois Lane Rachel Brosnahan at least promises Gunn’s film will have more life and humor than many of the DCEU entries.

Is the era of the superhero movie over? After the MCU‘s rough year last year a string of poor showings to end the DCEU‘s run, it’s up for debate. But the worst may be yet to come for the genre next decade, even if James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s DCU franchise reboots goes well.
