Stockport is gearing up to host its first Full Moon Festival later this week as the town comes together to host three-days of colourful celebrations.
A major holiday in many parts of Asia, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, happens on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night. The traditional festival, which is considered as one of the most important holidays - especially in Chinese culture - is celebrated by reuniting with family reunions, eating mooncakes, and getting involved with parades and lantern making.
To mark the occasion this year, the Stockport & Salford Hongkongers Community Interest Group and Yellow Economic Circle Manchester - supported by Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Council - will come together for three-days of celebrations from September 15-17. Those attending can expect everything from handmade lanterns and a two-metre tall Big Moon Installation, to food stalls showcasing delicious Hong Kong cuisine.

There will also be an exhibition of traditional handmade lanterns, live music and a handicraft maker’s market. And with something fun on every corner, families can also take part in free crafts at Children’s Corner, where children can try out their creativity and draw a lantern of their own whilst learning about the history of the festival.
