Stockport is being recognised for its nightlife after receiving a prestigious award.
The Purple Flag Award was presented to councillors of Stockport and acknowledges that the town has focused on the security and well-being of both tourists and locals while simultaneously offering a lively and varied blend of food, entertainment, and culture.
The awards aim to improve the quality and increase the attraction of town and city centres from 5pm to 5 am around the world.

There are currently around 100 Purple Flag locations in the world, ranging from small market towns to well-known tourist attractions with the award now running for almost 15 years.
Stockport saw success in 2023 after becoming the Greater Manchester Town of Culture for creating strong engagement with partners like the police for safety and the variety of events available during the qualified hours. The Greater Manchester town has been recognised nationally by publications such as The Guardian and The Times describing Stockport as a desirable place to live and work.
Due to the bar and restaurant scene growing in Stockport, it has been commonly referred to as ‘the New Berlin’ and has now put itself on the international map. The Purple Flag Award is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) and works alongside stakeholder groups backed by the Government, police and businesses.
