A string of community groups are thousands of pounds better off thanks to supermarket shoppers.
Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, Kirkcudbright RNLI and Dalbeattie and District Day Centre are among the organisations to have benefitted from Co-op’s Local Community Fund.
Co-op members raise funds to support local projects by using their membership card when they buy own-brand products and services.
The mountain rescue team is receiving £1,849 for new kit, with the lifeboat team getting £2,711 to train new members and the day centre £2,971 to expand its meals on wheels service.
The Castle Douglas Better Lives Partnership is receiving £1,381 for new IT equipment and the Stepping Stones Food Bank in Castle Douglas has received £1,982, with 1st Kirkcudbright Rainbows £1,892.
There’s also £1,572 to help Galloway Hillbillies Bike Club put their coaches through qualifications, with £1,720 for Newton Stewart Men’s Shed to kit out their base and Wigtown Community Fridge £2,390.
Director of community and member participation at Co-op, Rebecca Birkbeck, said: “We’re really proud of our local community fund and the impact it’s had supporting thousands of local causes across the UK.
“These groups deliver incredible grassroot projects, enabling them to provide important services, support and activities for their diverse communities.”
Over Christmas, Co-op members and customers can donate their rewards balance via the Co-op app or in store.
Co-op has pledged to match the donations up to £1 million.
