Squid Game — The Challenge has won the Reality category at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The UK-produced Netflix show beat off competition from shows such as Banged Up and Married At First Sight. A competition version of Korean drama Squid Game, it pitted 456 payers against each other in a big to win a massive cash prize.
The challenges ranged from the infamous “Red Light Green Light” from the 2021 drama, in which contestants had to avoid moving while in the eyeline of a horrifying giant doll, to new ones based on children’s games such as Battleship. One player ultimately walked away with $4.56M.
The Traitors won last year, when the the category was known as Reality and Constructed Factual.
The awards are taking place today (May 12) in London at the Royal Festival Hall. Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett are once again hosting, with scores of the UK’s biggest stars in attendance.

Selena Gomez won the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival last night (May 25) for her role in the Spanish film Emilia Pérez.The popstar shares the award with three of her co-stars in the film, Karla Sofia Gascón, Adriana Paz and Zoe Saldaña.Emilia Pérez is a musical crime comedy directed by Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone), and it tells the story of a woman who is tasked with assisting an escaped Mexican cartel leader to undergo sex reassignment surgery.The film received one of the festival’s longest standing ovations after its premiere on May 18, and also won the Jury Prize. It has now been acquired by Netflix.The prestigious win cements Gomez’s gradual move away from music and toward embracing acting full-time.

The 8 Show director Han Jae-rim has revealed that the new K-drama series had started development before Squid Game, which it has been often compared to.In in a new interview with The Korea Times, The 8 Show director Han Jae-rim told that publication that he “understands” that the new Netflix K-drama had “started getting developed before [Squid Game]”. He added that he thought twice about working on the series following the “explosive success” of Squid Game.Han later outlined what he believes are the differences between the two K-dramas, saying that they diverge “in terms of rules and conflicts”.

The final season of Netflix’s “The Crown” leads the pack this year with eight nominations, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out on an overall drama series nod.
