After being told that his story was too grotesque and unrealistic, Hwang Dong-hyuk set aside his script for Squid Game for 10 years. When Netflix came looking for overseas content, Hwang took his shot and gave it a drama that quickly became the most-watched series in the streaming service’s history.

He did it a little reluctantly, without big plans to continue filmmaking. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is currently working on a brand-new satirical comedy based on his K-drama’s global success.Yesterday (May 19), Deadline reported that Hwang is currently in the early stages of developing a new satire about the creation of his hit Netflix series Squid Game, provisionally titled The Best Show On The Planet. The new series is said to be based on Hwang’s own personal experiences of being catapulted to global stardom with Squid Game’s instantaneous, viral success. However, as Deadline notes, there are “few details available to share” about the show at the moment.The Best Show On The Planet is now the third project Hwang is publicly known to be working on – following a “violent” new feature film titled Killing Old People Club inspired by the work of Italian novelist and philosopher Umberto Eco, as well as the highly-anticipated second season of Squid Game, currently scheduled for release in 2024.Teasing the new Squid Game season, Hwang said: “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said the show’s second season will be released by the end of 2023 or 2024.The show’s first season broke records for Netflix when it was released last year, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirming a second season had been ordered back in January.In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dong-hyuk provided an update on the second season’s progress. The report reads: “Hwang is in the midst of final discussions with Netflix for a second season of Squid Game and anticipates that it could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024.”It states that Dong-hyuk has “about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script”.Teasing the new season, he added: “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.

While Netflix is canceling a bunch of projects to curb overspending, there are some originals that keep chugging along thanks to their massive popularity. One of those shows is “Squid Game” which became the most talked-about genre series of 2021 and helped cement that foreign-made originals can compete with western genre stories like “Stranger Things.” The massive hit that hails from South Korea is indeed getting a second season but don’t expect them to rush it.

Lee Jung-jae, who made history with his work on “Squid Game,” is now making his directorial debut with the spy movie “Hunt,” which is premiering at Cannes.Although he’s the first Asian to win the Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards for lead actor drama in Netflix’s dystopian drama, and likely will continue that history as the first to be nominated for an Emmy for a non-English speaking role, he hopes it won’t always be like this.“I hope later on we don’t need to put any boundaries like Asian men and non-Asian men,” he tells Variety. “I hope this boundary just doesn’t need to exist going forward.”While making “Hunt,” Lee described how he used persuasion versus control while working with actors. “Instead of control, I’d say we had a lot of conversations with the actors.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that he predicts the next batch of episodes won’t be ready for release until the end of 2023 at the earliest.

Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae has opened up about his life since the Netflix series’ viral success and what the show might mean for the future of Korean media.In a recent interview with Deadline, Lee spoke about how, despite the massive international popularity of Squid Game – including critical success at the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards – life has largely stayed the same for him.“I still don’t feel like my life has changed dramatically,” he explained, although, it’s been a different story for his career. The actor noted that the K-drama’s success has opened up “more opportunities to work with great people on more projects”.On the topic of opportunities, Lee touched on how he has “already [been] getting a lot of support” from renowed talent agency Creative Artists Agency, which he signed with earlier this year.

In Squid Game, lead character Seong Gi-hun is a down-on-his-luck gambling addict given a dangerous opportunity to win a fortune and turn his life around by playing deadly children’s games against 456 other cash-strapped no-hopers. Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong, has almost nothing in common with his alter-ego: he is one of South Korea’s biggest stars through films such as Deliver Us from Evil and the Along with the Gods franchise and shows Chief of Staff and Triple.
