TV Talk Podcast: Who Is In Front For The Drama Series Emmy – ‘Succession’, ‘Squid Game’, ‘This Is Us’, ‘Yellowstone’ Or A Big Surprise?

The tight race for one of Emmy’s most prestigious categories, Outstanding Drama Series, is the topic for this week’s edition of Deadline’s podcast, TV TALK.  Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond and Deadline TV critic Dominic Patten go at it in trying to make sense of the contenders, and who may have the edge – or not. Last year the winner was Netflix’s The Crown which finally triumphed after several tries and led to a breakthrough in the category for the first time for the streamer. However, as is the case with so many series that take a year off – or more – and then return to the contest, The Crown is not eligible to defend its Emmy crown this time around.

After Jeymes Samuel Brought Diversity To The Western, He & LaKeith Stanfield Ready To Take On The Bible With ‘The Book Of Clarence’ — Cannes Disruptors

If you’re a fan of the music and video creations by singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel — performed under his stage name The Bullitts — you’ll recognize that same enthusiasm, precociousness and ambition directed into his feature directorial debut, The Harder They Fall. Spurred by his love for the genre and the lack of diversity in old Hollywood westerns, Samuel recruited a veritable who’s who of Black actors — Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield and Jonathan Majors, among them — to play infamous gunslingers of color who somehow eluded the attention of previous storytellers. The film began its journey as the 2013 short They Die By Dawn, which he broadened into a Netflix feature seen around the world. A rare talent in that he not only writes, directs and produces but also scores his films — he has a silky singing voice reminiscent of his brother, Seal — Samuel’s versatility is outshone only by his irresistible and infectious enthusiasm for cinema, from its history to a future he is determined to be part of. Now, he’s ready to unveil his next film, this one with Stanfield and set in the Bible era.

‘Black Mirror’ season six in the works

Black Mirror is in development.Variety reports that a source said that the forthcoming Netflix series is more cinematic in scope and will comprise more episodes than season five, which aired in 2019.The previous three-episode season starred Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace and Miley Cyrus. As Variety notes, the new season of Black Mirror will be the first since since creator Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left their production company House of Tomorrow, which was backed and licensed by Endemol Shine Group, in January 2020.Brooker and Jones have since set up their own company, Broke and Bones, which Netflix invested in as part of a five-year arrangement.Part of the reason why there haven’t been any new episodes for three years is because Endemol Shine Group (acquired by Banijay Group in 2020) continued to own the rights to Black Mirror. A license deal between Banijay Rights and Netflix has since been reached. The future of Black Mirror was also in doubt a couple of years ago.
