‘Squid Game’ Creator/Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Believes Season 2 Could Be Ready Between 2023-2024

The tight race for one of Emmy’s most prestigious categories, Outstanding Drama Series, is the topic for this week’s edition of Deadline’s podcast, TV TALK.  Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond and Deadline TV critic Dominic Patten go at it in trying to make sense of the contenders, and who may have the edge – or not. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said he planted clues in season one “just in case” a second season was confirmed.The writer and showrunner spoke to IndieWire, explaining he had hidden clues and hints “for myself and for the audience” while he was writing the Netflix hit.“Just in case there is another season, these things could be loose knots,” he said. “I only currently have a broad storyline.“I’m in the process of structuring the story and the new games, and wanting to crystallise them into more detailed ideas.”A second season was confirmed back in January, with Hwang recently adding it will be released by the end of 2023 or 2024.A recent report reads: “Hwang is in the midst of final discussions with Netflix for a second season of Squid Game and anticipates that it could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024.”It also states that Dong-hyuk has “about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script”.Meanwhile, the Squid Game creator is working on a satirical comedy based on the inception and success of his K-drama, provisionally titled The Best Show On The Planet.The new series is said to be based on Hwang’s own personal experiences of being catapulted to global stardom with Squid Game’s instantaneous, viral success.

Black Mirror is in development.Variety reports that a source said that the forthcoming Netflix series is more cinematic in scope and will comprise more episodes than season five, which aired in 2019.The previous three-episode season starred Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace and Miley Cyrus.As Variety notes, the new season of Black Mirror will be the first since since creator Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left their production company House of Tomorrow, which was backed and licensed by Endemol Shine Group, in January 2020.Brooker and Jones have since set up their own company, Broke and Bones, which Netflix invested in as part of a five-year arrangement.Part of the reason why there haven’t been any new episodes for three years is because Endemol Shine Group (acquired by Banijay Group in 2020) continued to own the rights to Black Mirror. A license deal between Banijay Rights and Netflix has since been reached.The future of Black Mirror was also in doubt a couple of years ago.
